Thesis Short Film - Silent Service

A navy sailor experiences solitude, deprivation and comradery aboard a nuclear submarine. This story was inspired a lot from my Grandpa's stories and experiences of his own, and I felt like honoring his life's journey.

The first concept drawing I did for Silent Service. The idea of sailors going through claustrophobic hallways while in an emergency stuck with me from the beginning.

My idea to keep the backgrounds consistent and tight was to model in 3D with 2D characters/effects. However, I liked 2D backgrounds that had a lot of lines and found a binary randomizer to create the intricate and unique line look of my film’s backgrounds.

The first rough storyboards. Some ideas were tossed later down the line or streamlined once I started.
